English Learning

At Prosser, we value our students’ experiences and knowledge and support the learning of additional languages, including having an English Learning program for students who are not yet fluent in the primary language of instruction at school.

At this time, we have 250 English Learning students, most of whom have Spanish as their heritage language. These students are enrolled in our Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) and the goal of this program is to provide educational support in the development of English fluency so that students better understand school curriculum. In doing so, we prepare students for academic success here and a successful transition to the postsecondary pathway of their choosing.

When students register for Chicago Public Schools, they are screened for language proficiency and English Learners are tested annually to measure growth towards fluency using the ACCESS test. This is a state-mandated test which helps to monitor the success of school programs, and parents receive ACCESS scores for their students each September.

At this time, we have an English Learner Program Teacher (ELPT) who oversees instruction and assessment within our EL Program, and we have EL and/or bilingual endorsed teachers in English, Mathematics, Social Science, World Language and Diverse Learning and have additional teachers in training currently so that we can better support a growing population of English Learning students. The ELPT Office is open during the school day to students for tutoring and additional supports, as well as being open two days a week after school until 5 p.m.

Parents matter, and Prosser supports the parents of our English Learning students with a Bilingual Advisory Council (BAC) that engages them in their students’ education. More information about this organization can be found on the BAC page of this website.

We look forward to working with you!
