10TH GRADE CHEMISTRY
Welcome to Chemistry! Chemistry studies matter (stuff) and how we change it into different states or new substances. A key to understanding chemistry is recognizing that all matter is made of extremely small particles we call atoms. Chemistry is a basic science that will help you understand biology and astronomy.
What are the types of things we will learn about?
- Why is it a bad idea to wear a metal coat in winter?
- What is energy and why is it “conserved?”
- Why do things rust more in Chicago than elsewhere?
- How does lead make us sick?
Tentative Course Outline:

Office Hours: My free periods are 1st, 3rd, and 6th. I can generally be found in Rooms 308 or 306.
How will grades work in this class? Grades are determined using total points and based on a 10-point scale (A: 100-90%, B: 89-80%, C: 79-70%, D: 69-60%, F: below 59%). Talk to Mr. Fluharty if you have any questions.
- Assessments: tests, quizzes, performance tasks, individual and group projects
- Practice for Mastery: smaller daily work that may be done individually or in groups
- Science & Engineering Practices (SEPs): labs, research projects, group assignments
Science Department Late Work and Assessment Retake Policies:
- Late Work: Students may turn in late work up to two weeks after the original due date with a 10% reduction in the assigned score.
- Assessments: Students may take missed assessments up to two weeks after the assessment date.
- Assessment Retakes: Students may retake assessments one time. The retake must be completed no more than two weeks after the original assessment was given.

Things to know:
- Cell phones are generally NOT allowed in class. Please put them away before entering the room.
- It is your responsibility to come to class on time.
- Come to class ready to learn. Bring your binder, calculator, loose-leaf paper, and writing utensils.
- If you are tardy, the door may be locked. Gently knock and I will let you in when appropriate.
- IDs must be on around your neck before entering the room and kept on the entire class period.
- No food is allowed in the classroom. You may have a water bottle with permission.
